Mountain bikers and the State of Washington are working to legitimize the sweet trails on the Olympic peninsula.
“We put ownership back on the interest group,” Fitzwater says, standing on a newly cut path on the hill just west of Port Angeles. “We’re working on partnerships now.”
That’s fine with Scott Turner, who heads up the Olympic Dirt Society. For years, bikers of various skill sets have used the semi-groomed trails and soft earth on this state-owned land for thrills, but now they have an agreement with the department and nearby landowner Green Crow to be responsible for regular maintenance and upkeep of Dry Hill.
“We had a decision to make,” Turner says, after Fitzwater approached the group. “We could go somewhere else or (get) legitimate.”
